Warning and Encouragement from Proverbs 10

“He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.  He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.  In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.  The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.  The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.  The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.  As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.  The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.  The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.  The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.  The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.”

— Proverbs 10:17-25, 28-32 (emphasis added)

Doug Wilson & Mark Driscoll - Men & Masculinity (Part 1)

This is a great clip from a discussion between Doug Wilson and Mark Driscoll.  It’s aimed at the men, but I’m sharing it for you gals because I believe it’s important for women, as helpmeets and future helpmeets, to know what’s important for men.

Thoughts on Loving the Lord

Matthew 22:37-38, “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.”

This verse couplet makes strikingly clear how much importance and weight the act of loving God ought to have for every human being.  I will first discuss the two most substantial reasons why Man ought to love God.  Secondly, I will discuss how Man ought to love God.  Finally, I will show why every Christian, by definition, does love God.

Why Man Ought to Love God

First, Man ought to love God because He is his Maker and Creator.

Revelation 1:8 says, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

This verse from the last book of the Bible describes God as the ultimate Being, the One who is the Source of all things.  Because Man derives his entire being from Him, Man therefore ought to love the Lord as his Creator.

Second, Man ought to love God as his Savior.  Although originally created by Him to be wholly good, Man chose a life of sin and consequently by his actions brought eternal damnation on himself.

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Psalm 116:1 reads, “I love the LORD, because He hath heard my voice and my supplications.”

Jesus Christ paid the ultimate penalty, death on the Cross, for the sins of mankind.  Therefore, Man ought to love the Lord as his Savior.

How Man Ought to Love God

But what does it mean to truly love the Lord?  Southern Baptist pastor Voddie Baucham gives his definition of “love” as the following, “Love is an act of the will, accompanied by emotion, that leads to action on behalf of its object.”  The actions all Christians should be making on behalf of the object of their love, that is, the Lord, are succinctly summarized in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

This passage reads, “Charity (love) suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.  Charity never faileth.”

In essence, this is the life God calls all Christians to lead and, by so doing, fulfill the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all their heart, soul, and mind. (Matt. 22:37)

Why Every Christian Does Love God

1 John 4:19 says, “We love Him, because He first loved us.”

This verse acknowledges the preeminence of God in all things.  Man in himself has no power to love.  Only by God’s grace and the work of the Holy Spirit can Man love the One to whom he owes life itself.  Thus, it is God who gives the gift of love to everyone whom He moves to call out upon His name.

“

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

The Preacher (via karlluft)

I read this in Ecclesiastes today—I love that God tells us exactly what He wants from us and then He gives us the grace to do it.  All glory belongs to Him!  Ephesians 2:4-5, “But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;).”

Hosea 10:12

I was reading through the book of Hosea this evening and this verse really stood out to me.  I love the imagery the author employs and the promise that if I serve God faithfully now, He will rain righteousness down on me. :) I found it a good reminder about what my life should really be about: doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God.  It also put me in mind of Matthew 6:19-20, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
